DC-BASED INDIE ROCKERS YOU FOOL! ANNOUNCE THEIR DEBUT ALBUM, “WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?”
THE ALBUM WILL RELEASE ON DIGITAL PLATFORMS ON AUGUST 23, 2024

You Fool!, the indie rock band from Washington DC, has announced the release of their debut full-length album. The record, titled “What is the Meaning of This?”, releases on digital platforms on August 23, 2024.
“The album title has sort of a double meaning,” says guitarist and songwriter Josh Ryan. “On the one hand, it reflects the introspective and contemplative nature of some of the tracks on the album. But on the other hand, it came from a phrase I overheard [wife and band’s songwriter and vocalist] Julia say to our cat. That duality of silliness and contemplation is something we play around with a lot.”
The track list of the album features some fan favorites, including the danceable pop anthem to the end of the world, “hello Armageddon”, and crowd-pleaser “Light of the Moon”, which depicts the slow-burn dissolution of a toxic relationship, starting with a haunting plea from vocalist and songwriter Julia Marasteanu before erupting in an explosive groove. Alongside these staples are newer tracks, including the energetic ode to yesteryear’s parties in “Stay the Same”, and the mournful electro-pop reflection on everyday horrors in “Mayday.”
Though the band doesn’t shy away from dark topics on some tracks, there is a powerful beating heart in other, more optimistic tracks on the album. “Learning to Walk Before You Can Run” taps into an emotional rollercoaster of triumphant highs and mournful lows, not unlike those which a parent must feel as their child takes their very first steps. To drive the emotion home, Josh, the composer of the instrumental track, uses audio samples of home videos from his older sister, now a parent, teaching her daughter to walk. Other tracks on the album similarly tap reservoirs of powerful emotions. “Empire (Pts. I & II)” recounts the story of an eventful nighttime tour of the DC monuments which transformed an uncertain date between Josh and Julia into a life-changing romance which, in turn, laid the groundwork for the band itself.

The idea for the band sprung from the relationship between founding members Julia and Josh. “Julia showed me a video of her singing karaoke for the Pocahantas song, ‘The Colors of the Wind.’ ” Josh recounts. “It blew me away - pun intended. For fun, we started playing a cover song together in my living room.”
“It was ‘Riptide’ by Vance Joy,” Julia adds.
From the start, the pair had a sense that they had something special. Together, they began to write songs of their own, and soon enough recruited other talented musicians, including Mayson Rangel on bass, Gregory Fine on guitar and keys, and Mike Celone on drums. To date, the band has released two EPs, including 2023’s “Escape from the Circus”, which details Julia’s past forays in the circus arts doing flying trapeze. Their sound has been compared to the likes of 90’s alternative legends The Cranberries, and more modern acts, such as Alvvays, Japanese Breakfast, and Paramore.
Despite their humble beginnings in Josh’s living room, the band has gone on to play shows with many other talented indie and alternative acts in the DC area and beyond. “We’ve gotten to the point where our gigs are really fun for us,” says Julia. “It just feels like we’re hanging out.” The band will celebrate the release of “What is the Meaning of This?” with an album release show on August 30th at Jammin Java in Vienna, VA.

Bio
"... perfectly merges the worlds of pop and rock in a way that hits hard..."
You Fool! began in basements in the suburbs of Washington, DC. Their blend of pulsing indie rock and dreamy, ethereal post-rock is so silky smooth you could sleep on it if you wanted to. But you know what they say about sleeping on good music: Don't! Their sound has been compared to the likes of 90's alternative legends the Cranberries, and modern indie rock darlings Alvvays and Japanese Breakfast.
